Speaking to Fox Sports Australia, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff stated that they have identified a total of four candidates.

When asked if reigning world champion Max Verstappen is their first choice, Toto responded: "Yes, he is. Look at his performance! Nevertheless, we don't want to overlook the other candidates."

"First and foremost, we need to ask ourselves what we can achieve with the car. Then, selecting the second driver will be easier because we already have George Russell, who has the potential to become a world champion."

"The main issue the team needs to address is not seeking a magical solution by bringing in a great driver but rather fixing the car."

"Lewis's quick decision surprised us, but we won't rush. We are the only team among the top three without a vacant seat. If that happens—if we decide early and Max decides to leave Red Bull, we won't have a seat available for him."

"We have some really interesting options, ranging from a young super talent to an older and highly experienced driver."

"However, we won't make a decision in the next few weeks or months because I want to continue monitoring the driver market."

Toto Wolff clarified that by young talent, he meant Mercedes' young talent Kimi Antonelli.

"As I said, many things will depend on Max's decision. But we have a young and promising kid in our hands. I don't want to put extra pressure on him, but he seems to have the potential to be one of the best."

"However, we don't want to rush and put a 17-year-old behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. We have a few more options we can explore."

"Of course, there are also interesting options in the market like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, who are both very good drivers. We are faced with a choice, and it's not an easy one!"
